BEYOND THE PALE

Beyond the Pale is a unique modern folk ensemble based in Toronto. Equally
committed to authentic folk forms and contemporary musical experimentation,
the members of the group hail from wide-ranging  backgrounds which converge
in a highly organic synthesis of styles.

The group was founded in 1998 by Eric Stein (Mandolin, Tsimbl) and also
includes Anne Lindsay (Violin), Sasha Luminsky (Accordion), Martin van de
Ven (Clarinets), and Bret Higgins (Bass). They are frequently joined by
vocalist Dave Wall and by guests on guitar and percussion.

Klezmer music, the traditional folk music of eastern-European Jews, is at
the core of Beyond the Pale's sound. The band is adept at both traditional
and modern interpretations of klezmer's soul-wrenching melodies and exciting
dance rhythms. Like klezmorim of the past, they are heavily influenced by
their eclectic and multicultural sorroundings. Flirting with elements of
other eastern-European folk styles (Roumanian, Ukrainian, Roma, Balkan), as
well as modern and North American styles (bluegrass, folk, reggae, funk),
they have forged a cohesive new sound, deeply rooted in Yiddish musical
traditions yet strikingly contemporary. Their unique original compositions
and inventive arrangements of traditional material strike a refined balance
between past and present, between authenticity and innovation. Listeners of
all ages and backgrounds are taken by the band's explosive dynamics and
sophisticated yet rootsy sound.
