OK, before I begin, I ask you, if you've not been to this show yet, GO =
and take 2 people each. It's worth it.
I was at "A Matter of Heart" the tribute to Stan Rogers show at the St. =
Lawrence Centre this past Saturday night. Like all theatre, curtain was =
at 8 pm, you buy your tickets at the box office, the lobby is roomy, has =
chairs for lounging with a bar stocked for intermission, and ushers =
politley escort you to your seat.
Now, I admit, I've never heard of Stan Rogers eventhough I'd heard a =
couple of his songs sung by other people. I spent my first 37 years =
listening to my mother play Chopin, Bach and those guys while my dad =
listened to the Carter Family in his woodshop in the basement. I myself =
was metaphorically chained to a piano playing playing Bach Inventions =
and studying symphony stuff under mum's classical scrutiny. So, until I =
became aquainted with that Paul Mills fellow, I didn't know the name =
Stan Rogers.
I went to see "A Matter of Heart" because Paul Mills, who just makes me =
smile, is in it.
Very quickly , the reason I was there changed. The songs of Stan Rogers =
are clear, poignant, so Canadian, visually vivid, full of love for the =
people he met and the stories of their lives. To hell with "I am a =
Canadian" anti-American beer ads (clever maybe, but a BEER AD folks). =
By contrast this show holds up the mirror to our country's people, real =
people's real lives and says "look at this", this IS it and I don't care =
if you buy beer.
The music arrangements by Paul Mills and Bob Ashley are brilliant. I'm =
a harmony junkie! I got my fix big time and everytime a new arrangement =
was like a new hit. Never boring, never redundant, always rich.=20
I bought the CD of the show becuase "White Squall", sung by Charlotte =
Moore, made all my hair stand on end, made me cry and for me was worth =
the ticket price itself.
Oh sure, you could drop a shit load of cash on the Lion King or Mama Mia =
and watch all the things that the techies, who really make the show be =
as it is, never get credit for anyway OR you could spend less money, =
see a show that gives credit where credit is due. The songs are ours. =
They're about us not a 70's pop band or a lion kitten that doesn't =
exist.
GO, GO, GO, What are you waiting for? Get movin'. Enjoy the show and =
go home singing.
cheers
donna
