I'm forwarding sad news that Lloyd Landa passed away very suddenly at home last night (August 2). He was a very talented musician and songwriter - pianist, guitarist and composer of songs with folk, country and pop influences as well as a classical suite. He was also passionate about music and musical friends.

He and partner Karen Linsley were to perform at the Mars Society International Convention in Toronto August 12, where their song "The Pioneers of Mars" is one of five global finalists in the contest for a national anthem commemorating the hoped-for colonization of Mars. The title track from their "Road to Roswell" CD won the 1997 Pegasus Award for Science Fiction/Fantasy in the filk world (science fiction songwriting), and they performed their original music at major science fiction conventions. The evening before his death, Lloyd was one of the musical contributors at long-time friend Norm Hacking's birthday party, where he sang two original compositions "I Am Stardust" and "We'll Always Have Paris". Usually he left the vocals to Karen's beautiful voice. He was enthusiastic about their new projects and an upcoming folk gig.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Sunday August 6 at Benjamin's Funeral Home, 2401 Steeles Avenue West, Toronto (416 663-9060, 1 light west of Dufferin, south side of Steeles at Alness). Shiva Sunday, Monday and Tuesday 8 pm at 27 Tyrrel Avenue.

Messages may be left at their email account, lllanda@idirect.com (yes 3 l's), but Karen may not be accessing the account for awhile. Other contact information is on their website at http://www.roadtoroswell.com . I will be attending on Sunday, so if anyone wishes to send a message c/o me before then, I can print it to take with me.

If there is further news, I will post again. Sad and missing a wonderful and talented musical friend. Thinking of you, Karen.
