Mary, it's wonderful that you're keeping Stan's music alive at home and
taking the time and effort to educate your family and friends. I think
that perhaps what you're feeling is that if you attend "A Matter of Heart"
somehow Stan's music will be diminished for you; that this is a
'production' and no-one could possibly do the music justice and by going
to this show you are 'copping' out, that you should only be listening to
the real thing in all it's purity; like this would be a 'hand-me-down' in
essence or a betrayal on your part. But as Paul Mills said, I truly
believe that Stan wanted his music to be heard, to live on, to be sung and
interpreted by others; he had so many stories and ideas to relay and the
superb musicians in this play give us something that Stan would be proud
of - a new insight, a new way of seeing, hearing, listening and
understanding Stan - with new meaning and an ever increasing depth of
respect and love for his remarkable vision. By dedicating themselves to
this depiction of Stan's songs in all their beauty, the actors and
musicians are paying Stan the highest tribute. And by going to this play,
you would be too; you wouldn't be doing him or yourself a disservice but
in fact, enriching your life immensely. I don't mean to belittle your
feelings and thoughts in any way, I just think that you're missing out on
a truly moving and satisfying experience, one that I think would make you
appreciate and honour Stan's music all the more.
