It's hard for me to understate my respect - and affection - for Sylvia
Tyson. From the day I first saw her sing at Mariposa with Ian, back in
1965, I've been touched by her songs and her voice, and most times I'm in
awe of her cool, reserved personality.
If you saw this morning's Globe (the Toronto edition, anyway) you
might have read the mostly positive review of her new one-woman show, River
Road, a pleasant if slight collection of stories and songs - including some
impressive new ones. This performance is at the Canadian Theatre Stage at
Berkeley and Front St., and has been woefully under-publicized (hey, my
office didn't get the job <g>)
Partly concert, partly story-telling session, and partly a smart,
astute woman's take on childhood, growing up in a small town, and
impressions of love lost, Sylvia devotes little to tales of show business
(although there is one priceless Ian story).
These are the dog days of August, when it's sometimes hard to
gather any energy to go out to performances, but if ever Sylvia Tyson's
music touched you, you'll love this show. Sure, it needs a shot of energy
from time to time that Sylvia's "cool" can't come up with, but it was a
warm-hearted evening with a singer and songwriter who was part of Canada's
first international success story (long before Lightfoot, Joni, Neil Young
and all the others). And an artist whose work reflects the very best of
Canadian music, and who is still on form, vocally and from a songwriting
point of view.
Please don't miss it the show.
Cheers,
Richard
