This has been such a thought provoking discussion I figgure I'd have to =
add my point of veiw.
For me, and again it is a personal veiw, folk music is defined by its =
performability. You don't have to be a virtuoso to perform the stuff. =
Also it typically seems to convey some sort of sense of person, place or =
time that the composer wants us to experience or share.
Sure MANY "Folk" musicans are extremely good with their instruments (who =
wouldn't be if you played 300 gigs a year) but at it's core it IS music =
that most people can play and perform. Be it a kitchen party, a jam, an =
open mike, you name it. It is the accessiblility that helps define the =
genre.
Before I start rambling on I'll cut it short, again the Gumboot =
philosophy "Less is More" seems to be guiding me ; ).
