CENTRE FOR THE ARTS GOES ‘GRAPE AND WINE’
St. Catharines, Ontario, Monday, August 14th, 2000…This season, Centre
for the Arts, Brock University, St. Catharines, Ontario is delighted to
be a sponsor of the 2000 Niagara Grape & Wine Festival. As part of the
festivities, the Centre will be presenting the following events:
KENNY WHEELER JAZZ QUARTET
Sunday, September 17th at 7 PM
The Sean O’Sullivan Theatre
Centre for the Arts, Brock University
A resident of England since 1952 and often thought to be an English
musician, KENNY WHEELER was born right here in St. Catharines in 1930.
Although not universally well-known in this country except to true jazz
connoisseurs, he is one of Europe’s most sought-after trumpet and
flugelhorn players.
His resume is impeccable: for many years he was a major solo voice of
the JOHNNY DANKWORTH ORCHESTRA, a featured performer with Germany’s
GLOBE UNITY ORCHESTRA on three albums, a member of ANTHONY BRAXTON’s
group, as well as winner of the 1975 Melody Maker Album of the Year
Award for SONG FOR SOMEONE.
Joining KENNY WHEELER will be JOHN SHERWOOD on piano, DUNCAN HOPKINS on
bass and DON THOMPSON on vibraphone.
Reserved seating for the KENNY WHEELER JAZZ QUARTET is $28.50 for adults
and $25.50 for students and seniors. Tickets may by purchased using VISA
and MasterCard from the Box Office, Centre for the Arts Brock University
by calling 905/688-5550 ext. 3257. Box Office hours are 10 AM to 4 PM,
Monday through Friday and starting on September 9, noon to 4 PM,
Saturdays.
McMASTER & JAMES
Saturday, September 23rd at 8 PM
Lakeside Park, Port Dalhousie
St. Catharines, Ontario
Grape & Wine Family Night stars the rich, harmonious voices of McMASTER
& JAMES. While their songs are undoubted pop, there is also a soulful
influence stemming from their wealthy knowledge of pop and R&B Top 40
music.
“Love Wins Everytime”, the first single from their self-titled debut
album, is a vibrant, Latin-flavoured track that was selected to appear
on the double platinum selling compilation PLANET POP 2000 – alongside
such pop stars as *NSYNC, BRITNEY SPEARS and the BACKSTREET BOYS.
Admission for this event is free.
IAN TYSON in concert
Sunday, September 24th, 2000 at 7 PM
The Sean O’Sullivan Theatre, Brock University
IAN TYSON has gone from the highest echelon of the folk music field to
the highest of the western music field -- a double-barreled achievement
that is truly profound in a business where artists are routinely
classified as to ‘style’ of music.
IAN TYSON is the consummate storyteller. His songs blend Canadian,
American and Mexican images in a pan-Western experience. COWBOYOGRAPHY,
his Canadian platinum-certified album, is a modern-day classic; nothing
else on the Western landscape can compare to it.
LOST HERD, Ian’s first new release in five years, features nine new
songs and a timeless cover of the classic “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”.
It is a collection of songs that reflect a disappearing way of life
while at the same time, shedding light on the lives we lead in greatly
different times and places.
In performance, IAN TYSON’s voice is still golden rich, if a little
roughed up and softened by age...as many of you who caught his previous
two appearances at the Centre for the Arts in 1989 and 1990 can attest.
Reserved seating for IAN TYSON in concert is $28.50 for adults and
$25.50 for students and seniors. Tickets may by purchased using VISA and
MasterCard from the Box Office, Centre for the Arts Brock University by
calling 905/688-5550 ext. 3257. Box Office hours are 10 AM to 4 PM,
Monday through Friday and starting September 9, noon to 4 PM, Saturdays.
