The weekend had one of those interesting momentum things happening. The band played to a small but thoroughly appreciative crowd at Mermaid's Lounge
on Friday... always a pleasure to play this club. It has a comfortable atmosphere, fabulous food, and it always sounds great.
Saturday, Michael appeared at the Markham Jazz Festival with a seven piece band. Although they were scheduled to go on at 6:30pm, the fest was
running behind and they didn't actually get going until 7:30 or so. Diehard fans stuck in there as well as other music lovers who were curious about
this hot act they've been hearing about for awhile. They were not disappointed. Michael Pickett took the stage with grace and style opening with
World Gone Crazy and captivated his audience... in particular a little girl of about 4 years of age who danced non-stop on the grass in front of him.
Michael couldn't resist the moment... he jumped onto the grass, mic and harmonica in hand and danced with her inviting her attention. But she was so
inside the music that she paid no attention to him and danced her little heart out. The show was amazing and the crowd loved what they heard and saw
and many said they would look forward to his return next year.
That same evening the band stripped down to a four piece with Shawn Kellerman, Al Cross, Steve Chadwick, and Michael who somehow managed to find room
to set up at the Unionville Arms Pub on Main Street. The place was packed to overflowing... many people reserved because they knew the band would be
there. We commend their patience since they had to wait longer than expected because of the festival delay. However, it was well worth it and the
band had the joint rocking until 2am.
So all in all the weekend turned out great. Thank you Jim Prudhomme (Mermaid's). Thank you Tom (Unionville Arms) and thank you Hal Hill for the
stage, your support, and your enthusiasm. We had a wonderful time.
And a special thank you to the volunteers at the Markham Jazz Festival. You all helped make your event special.
Louise
