Description of Performers:

EMBER SWIFT

EMBER SWIFT, a Toronto-based singer-songwriter and simultaneous =
all-female trio, performs with the sounds of guitar, violin, bass, bowed =
guitar and percussion. Best described as HYPHENATED or STYLE-MERGING, =
the music crosses many style boundaries and merges sounds from jazz to =
funk to punk to classical with a definite folk platform. The music has =
also been deemed "advocacy" or "activist" music due to the lyric's =
undeniable call for social change. She has four recordings to her =
credit, "Self-titled" (1996), "InsectInside" (1997), "Can=92t Corner Me" =
(1998), "Permanent Marker" (1999) and a fifth *LiVe* album is scheduled =
for release in November of 2000. As a completely independent Artist, =
EMBER SWIFT owns and co-runs the music label, Few=92ll Ignite Sound. It =
is this business that has booked and promoted EMBER SWIFT on several =
Canadian and U.S. tours since 1997, keeping the band on stages for =
nearly half of every year. All releases have sold exceptionally well =
both =91off-the-stage=92 and through FESTIVAL DISTRIBUTION (in Canada) =
and GOLDENROD MUSIC INC. & LADYSLIPPER DISTRIBUTION (in the U.S.), who =
are instrumental in making EMBER SWIFT=92s music available in select =
retail outlets. This Canadian Artist continues to find success on an =
independent level, proudly and without apology.

REBECCA CAMPBELL

REBECCA CAMPBELL, the singer best known for her work backing JANE =
SIBERRY and fronting Ottawa's FAT MAN WAVING and THREE SHEETS TO THE =
WIND, currently performs with a quartet featuring the sounds of vocals, =
guitars, accordion, keyboards, drums, double and electric bass, =
clarinets and toy piano. TUG (Festival Distribution) is deeply rooted in =
both the jazz and folk traditions. Created in close collaboration with =
guitarist/composer JUSTIN HAYNES, it is a distinctive collection of =
honest, strong and elegant songs. The Rebecca Campbell Chamber Porch =
Jazz... Peripheral Pop Quartet creates music that is spacious, lyrical, =
adventurous, and full of surprises, with the power to evoke distinct =
colours and stirring atmospheres. Unconcerned by idiomatic boundaries, =
the band plays intimate, organic, interactive music: tight but loose. =
Whether she is singing quiet, imagistic poetry, or lyrics that challenge =
the listener to explore their own sense of openness and honesty, =
Rebecca's delivery is always emotionally rooted, and yet never =
unrestrained. No matter how you might choose to describe their music, it =
does, without question, make for a rewarding and engaging evening of =
words and music.=20

PENELOPE SWALES

Penelope Swales is an Australian folk singer-songwriter who is currently =
touring North America. A popular feature artist at festivals in her =
country of origin, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, Penelope has =
built a following with her "tell it as it is" style of storytelling and =
her acoustic mastery. With 5 albums released, her latest - "Justifying =
Your Longings To The Doctor" - is with inhibition and confronts the =
listener inviting them to an intimate view of her craft. An artist with =
a social conscience and rare emotional honesty, Penelope Swales is not =
to be missed! This will be her Toronto debut.=20
