That person has good taste!
Seriously, for a writer like me who never "made the big time" (I'm sure it
is just around the corner, as Ronnie Hawkins says) the high water mark of a
career can be the legacy of material passed on to younger performers. I have
been lucky to have many professional and amateur performers sing and record
my songs and in many ways that is the best thing that happened in my
experience.
At that point the narcisstic values of the singer songwriter cross over into
the true tradition of folk music.
I came to this conclusion in a bar in Santa Cruz listening to a bunch of
youngsters singing songs written by my friend Stan Rogers (a real legend).
They had no idea who he was and were not interested - they just liked the
songs.
I thought how happy Stan would be to know that.
