Hey Everybody,
Ian North is playing tonight at C'est What, in Toronto. For the benefit of
those who don't know what they are missing, here is my own (unpaid)
testimonial:
Here is an amazing singer-songwriter who has just released a wonderful album
called Emptiful. I met Ian a couple of years ago at The Old York where I
heard him play for the first time. I remember thinking - how could I not
have already heard about this guy of extraordinary talent?
Since then, I have seen him play countless times, booked shows together with
him and my band Likewater and booked him as a Feature Act at Groovy Mondays
Open-Stage. I never get tired of hearing his smooth voice and brilliant
lyrics!
I can hear many influences in Ian's music such as Bruce Cockburn, Steve
Earle or Bruce Springsteen. In his bio it mentions that you may also hear
shades of Junior Parker, Steely Dan, Jackson Brown, Robert Priest and even
Kurt Cobain. Listen for yourself at www.iannorth.com or read his bio below!

Ian North Biography
*******************
Ian North has been called a songwriter's songwriter for, among other things,
the way familiar and off-beat references from music history, literature and
pop culture are juxtaposed.
North's music especially appeals to the aurally literate listener who can
appreciate its roots in the simple anecdotal origins of folk, and the
influences ranging from surrealism to C&W, psychedelia to electronica. It
will fit fans of Bruce Cockburn, Steve Earle or Bruce Springsteen, but the
listener will also hear shades of Junior Parker, Steely Dan, Jackson Brown,
Robert Priest and even Kurt Cobain in some of the album's songs.
But it's North's accessible, imagistic and dispassionate lyrics that
distinguish him among contemporary singer-songwriters. The directness of his
language creates a Zen-inflected vision of loss, acceptance and the search
for freedom.
Born and raised in Ottawa, North was on the road by 18, traveling and
performing across Ontario. He came to Toronto to study at York University,
and after some travels and some journalism, he formed a punk-country-swing
band called the Swingheads that developed a following in the then-lively
local scene of Toronto's Beaches. North also found a home at Fat Albert's,
Toronto's oldest coffee house and occasional home to some of the city's best
song-writers. A move to rural Hastings County led to a regular stint at the
Madoc Hotel playing country, rock and blues in the Thursday Night Jam Band.
Since then his music has evolved to express all the elements of the artist's
personal history - from the freedom of life on the road to the intimacy of
playing for regulars at the bar, from the experimentalism of improvisation
and spoken word to the energy of country punk. His latest recording,
Emptiful, is the consummation of these experiences.
