Hi all,
Back in 1974 when Paul Mills gave me my first radio start doing music
journalism on his CBC show Touch The Earth, the very first thing I produced
was a series of 14 episodes that was called From A Song To Royalties. I went
around with my tape recorder and spoke to dozens of people in various
sectors of the business. The interviews were broken down and organized
thematically, so that each episode traced the process from the artist making
a song, through the recording and distribution, to people finally hearing
the song, on a record, in concert, on the radio etc.
For many years, I've been a midwife to so many projects making dozens of
albums along the way and running record companies etc. I'm about to make my
"coming out" album (as both writer and singer) and I'm constantly reminded
from talking to old friends and new, how much everything has changed and how
much everything stays the same. No matter what you know, there's still so
much to learn.
In that spirit, I'd like to propose revisiting the theme of that original
series I did almost 30 years ago and hear from folks on Maplepost about
current business practices.
To get it going, I've drafted discussion threads with my next four emails.
Each thread focuses on one part of the "star making machinery". I've jotted
down some thoughts and questions to get it going and generate your own
personal responses.
I would suggest we keep the information "first hand" i.e. only what we know
from our own personal experience. Pick up on anything that catches your
interest and tell us your story and share with us some insights and advice.
I'm a curious sort myself so I might step in and ask a supplementary
question or two to see if we can take something deeper.
I offer this in the spirit of drawing the resources from this community. The
opinions I put forward are simply my own and may differ from others who have
a different point of view or memory of 'what happened'. The more 'truths' we
can gather from the group, a more deeper understanding may evolve for all of
us.
Hope this proves to be a valuable resource for us all. Here goes.
Bill
