back up, back up, back up. 
My e-mail list is backed up on a floppy, and hard copy before that.
This backup takes seconds, and helps protect against the "carelessness on the
part" of others.
That said, having had a hard drive crash I can only sympathise with anyone who
has had technical difficulties of any sort. I wish you best wishes on
reestablishing your mailing list.
