Well, Gene, then here's an accordian story.
We got a call from Bob Missen on Friday night. Could Nutshell Music please
provide a small system for a CAPACOA showcase featuring Peter deSotto
(Quartetto Gelato)? It would be used only to provide reinforcement for
Peter's vocals over a hotel-supplied grand piano. Easy enough. We sent gear
and a great tech to do the single-channel deed. That side of it worked well
- how could it not?
What impressed me about the story (as told by our tech, Paul Dobranski - a
good guy - Mapleposters would really enjoy his work and his meek way...but
I digress...) was the saga of the hotel's piano. Access to the room was
granted an hour-ish before the showcase. The piano was checked for proper
tuning all AOK. But wait - no sustain. Yuck. Bob was suitably unimpressed,
but immediately flew into "find a solution for my artist" mode. It being
Sunday, local backline suppliers were closed. There didn't appear to be an
available 88-Key weighted keyboard at the conference. Ugh.
Peter deSotto then proceeded to show why he's worth hiring - he made the
very best of a bad situation. With humour and class, he pulled out his
accordian and played Gustav Mahler by squeezebox. Our simple one-channel PA
reinforcement worked. The audience loved it.
Accordians. "Banjers." Jaw/Jew's Harps. They all have their place. Now I
ask - what other interesting or truly odd "saves" have people made when
things just weren't going well, or gear died, or whatever?
