Suzie Vinnick

Suzie Vinnick's star is definitely on the rise. A singer-songwriter
with great depth and versatility, her debut album, "Angel In The
Sidelines", met with enthusiastic reviews tagging Suzie as "one to
watch" on the Canadian music scene. The success of Angel made Suzie
an artist in demand. She has toured the club and festival circuits
with the exceptional guitarist, Rick Fines (Jackson Delta) and
percussionist extraordinaire, Miche Pouliot (Jann Arden, Bruce
Cockburn & k.d Lang).

She has performed for Canadian Peacekeepers in Bosnia and the Persian
Gulf, at the Festival International De Jazz De Montreal, Toronto's
Harbourfront Festival, the Ottawa Folk Festival, Cultures Canada
and a number of other venues around Canada and the U.S. Based in
Toronto, Suzie is currently working on a new CD. Check out

Betty & The Bobs

Betty and the Bobs was formed as an extracurricular vehicle for a
group of Toronto musicians and friends who had worked together in
different bands. The mandate is to do all the songs they have ever
wanted to do, but would never get around to doing in their own bands.
This includes a bunch of old tunes they grew up with -- country,
blues, R&B, Beatles, gospel, old jazz, as well as some wacky,
original songs.

THE BETTYS are: Soozi (Swamperella) Schlanger (vocals);
Katherine Wheatley (vocals & guitar); and Suzie Vinnick (vocals,
guitar, mandolin.

THE BOBS are: David Woodhead (bass, guitar, lap steel);
Wendell Ferguson (guitar); Rich Greenspoon (drums); and Bill
Brennan (piano, accordian, percussion).

Check out the website for information about each of these amazingly
talented artists!

Thu Jan 17 - Haze
8:30, $6

Cradled in the arms of Folk and Celt whose architecture betrays a
classical edge to a rock foundation, Haze is a collection of artists
taking you on a kaleidoscopic journey, thematic in nature and dramatic
in execution. Tribal heartbeats hint at Pagan memories and cryptic
Bardic tales shared beside an ancient bonfire. This is FOLK-NOIRE at
its epicentre.

The members of Haze gather around Leanne's disquieting lyrics and
enchanting melodies to create luscious thematic layers. Together,
they create a potent adventure in the dramatic, with costumes and
magic.

Sat Jan 19 - Don Ross
8:30, $20adv/$22.50

One of today's true innovators of guitar composition and technique,
Don Ross has emerged as one of the most respected musicians in Canada
and one of the top guitarists in the world. In September 1996, he
managed to do what no other player has done: win the prestigious U.S.
National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship for the second time (he first
won in 1988). The competition, held yearly in Winfield, Kansas, cannot
be won only with immaculate technique, but the player's music must
also display a high degree of emotion and intensity: hallmarks of
Don's style.

The son of a Scottish immigrant father and a Mikm'aq Aboriginal mother,
Don was born in 1960 into a musical family. He first started
experimenting with the solo possibilities of the acoustic guitar at
the age of eight. By age ten he was playing in alternate tunings and
exploring "fingerstyle" technique, a right hand discipline similar to
classical guitar playing. Preferring to write original music and
develop a personal style, Don's self-taught journey on the instrument
has encouraged him to follow his musical intuition. The result is an
unclassifiable musical style that borrows from jazz, folk, rock and
classical music. When asked, Don usually pigeonholes his music as
"Heavy Wood"!
