Hey, boys and girls, I am opening for Ron Hynes at Hugh's Room on Jan.30!!!
I actually asked if I could do it, because I'm such a Ron Hynes fan and this
is a legitimate form of stalking, I feel. It wasn't easy to get this gig; I
had to promise Holmes Hook he could play jingle stick on all my upcoming
recording sessions, and this may not be a good career move for me, but I
don't care, je m'en fous.

Ron, as most of you will be aware, is a monster songwriter, able to wedge
his Newfoundland-accented "darlin" something like 23 times into one of my
favourite songs, "Where Do You Get Off". He's written songs that make you
weep, like "Atlantic Blue" (about the Ocean Ranger disaster) and "Godspeed"
aboutthe death of Gene McLellan, and lots of songs that make you smile.
Most famous of course is "Sonny's Dream", covered by hundreds of other
singers, and carelessly changed in Ireland where they think it's
traditional.

He's also a great story-teller although he doesn't always get into that on
stage. My favourites are the one about field fire he set as a child, and
about trying to collaborate on a song with Stompin' Tom.

He was part of the Wonderful Grand Band, and he's done a bit of acting. I
really liked him as Mary Walsh's villainous developer ex in "Dooley
Gardens". Also, he has a gorgeous, gorgeous voice.

He's also a notorious feisty person. Indeed, when I sang my song "You Pissed
Off a Sound Man in Labrador City" at the East Coast Music Awards in
St.John's a few years back, many people in the audience thought it was about
Ron! I cannot confirm or deny the truth of this.

Anyway, I think he's great.

So I'll do about twenty minutes to get things started. I'm not sure who'll
be playing or singing with me but hopefully there will be someone fabulous.
