Hi,
Isn't it ironic, as Alanis would say, that when people think of
traditional "Canadian" folk songs they come up with pre-Confederation
Newfoundland tunes (I don't mind, but I'm sure it annoys Newfoundland
nationalists) and songs from Quebec (do I need another bracket here?)
When I was growing up in PEI, a lot of people listened to a gruesome
radio program called "The Outports", which played country music -- some of
it by Canadians like Hank Snow and Wilf Carter, but most by Americans. The
"folk music" we'd hear was sung by legit singers with ubertrained voices and
it seemed to be all nickety nackety noo noo noo, and I really hated it.I
didn't hear those gorgeous Newfoundland songs until I went there with the
Girl Guides during the Boer War. I don't think the Newfoundland songs were
part of the tradition of regular folks in the rest of the country.
In my family we listened to Broadway musicals and Spike Jones.
what is my point? Hmmm, that's always been a problem for me.
But, hey, James, why not tell your fan to buy one of my cd's from
Borealis, and she will also receive a FREE compilation tape of all- Canadian
stuff by a lovely variety of folks.
sorry, I did not mean to be self-serving here, the above paragraph is a
joke, although of course "Gaelic Envy" does contain "Moose on the Highway",
which, although written in 1997, does have a heavy dose of
post-confederation Newfoundland content.
