An Evening of Greek Folk Music


On Saturday January 19th at 8:00 pm, at EASTMINSTER UNITED CHURCH, 310
Danforth Ave. (at Chester), Music Umbrella Chamber Concerts and Small World
Music present a remarkable evening of Greek music. Tickets are $15 at the
door - call 416 461-6681.


A rarity outside of the Greek community, this special evening is an
opportunity to hear many of the different styles of Greek folk music -
styles which vary greatly from region to region - played by some of
Toronto's finest. The concert will include both well known tunes and
forgotten gems of Dimotiká (Greek Folk Music).

Since a Canada Council-funded study tour of Greece, singer JAYNE BROWN has
worked toward showcasing the wonderful music that she learned, as well as
the talents of some great Toronto
Musicians. In organizing this concert, she brings this beautiful repertoire
to Toronto audiences. The musicians, although they are greatly respected
and in demand in the Greek community, are not often heard outside Greek
events. For that matter the repertoire is rarely heard in Toronto outside
of Greek festivals or family celebrations.

As Jayne puts it: "It is a unique mixture of musicians, some of us come
from Greece, some
Greeks born in Canada and some of us plain Canadians who just dig the
music. Some of us have just met for the first time, having come together
for the love of the music, to make the concert."

The concert will be very much a real traditional evening - everyone sharing
their favourite tunes, featuring the virtuosity of some of the city's
finest players on clarinet, violin, lauto and bouzouki.
