Tara Nova is a Toronto based ensemble that plays Traditional Irish and
Canadian music. It is unusual to have Uilleann pipes in bands in North
America but to have two pipers of this caliber is a real treat. Debbie
Quigley (Don Henley, Kitty's Kitchen, Dulaman, Seoda) is acknowledged by
her peers to be Canada's finest exponent of this old instrument having
learned her craft from Chris Langan and is now passing her knowledge on
to a new generation of pipers. Kelly Hood (TipSplinter, The Ena O'Brien
Band, Seoda) is a rising star on the North American scene and has
recently toured New Zealand and Australia. Bill Kervin (Dulaman) is a
Maritimer (New Brunswick) who was recorded for broadcast by Irish
National Radio as part of the 50th Anniversary of Comhaltas, an
organization dedicated to traditional music and song, he is also the
founder of Tara Nova. Pat Simmonds (TipSplinter, The Ena O'Brien Band,
Seoda) is a multi instrumentalist who has toured internationally with
various groups and now lives in Toronto where he teaches fiddle and
Gaelic throughout Ontario.
The beauty of the Irish Uilleann pipes is fully explored in this group.
The pieces range from the Baroque like compositions of Turlough
O'Carolan through to self composed waltzes and traditional jigs and
reels. Underpinning the dual pipe work is an intricate mix of bodhran
and guitar which explores the rhythmic and harmonic potential of the
old and gracious musical form that is Irish traditional music. The
sound is complemented with the wonderful singing of Bill Kervin.
Whether interpreting unaccompanied Newfoundland songs or more recently
composed ballads, his is a rich and distinctive voice that sits
perfectly within the overall sound of the band.
They have performed at the Harbourfront Centre as part of it's ongoing
summer performance schedule and were recently asked to provide the
musical setting for the inauguration of the new Dean of Theology at
UofT. They look forward to future engagements in Canada and abroad.
