Beyond the Pale is a unique modern folk ensemble based in Toronto. With
Klezmer music, the traditional folk music of eastern-European Jews, as
their core sound, the band is adept at both traditional and modern
interpretations. Their music clearly shows the influence of their
multicultural surroundings as they flirt with other eastern-European folk
styles as well as modern and North American styles, including bluegrass,
folk and reggae. The result is a music fusion steeped in tradition and
infused with soul-wrenching melodies and infectious dance rhythms.
The group was founded in 1998 by ERIC STEIN (Mandolin, Tsimbl) and also
includes ANNE LINDSAY (Violin) although for this evening the terrific
violinist, BOGDAN DJUCIK, who plays on their CD will be substituting for
Anne Lindsay. Also in the group are SASHA LUMINSKY (Accordian), MARTIN VAN
DE VEN (Clarinets) and BRET HIGGINS (Bass). Their wide-ranging backgrounds
converge to create a truly unique sound.
The group's striking compositions and inventive arrangements of
traditional material have earned them high praise. They have performed
well over two hundred times over the last four years, at folk, klezmer and
world music festivals, and at theatres, clubs, community affairs and
private functions. The group has performed in Toronto and across southern
Ontario, as well as Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, western New York and North
Dakota, and in 2001 made their first appearances in British Columbia and
Eastern Quebec. Listeners of all ages and backgrounds are taken by the
band's explosive dynamics and sophisticated yet rootsy sound. Their debut
release "Routes" is available on the Borealis label.
Opening the evening will be the supremely talented, powerful vocalist and
singer-songwriter, DARLENE.
Enjoy an energetic and entertaining evening with Beyond the Pale, Acoustic
Harvest's first concert of 2002. You'll not regret it!
Lillian, Sue, Dave, Matthew and sound engineers extraordinaire Lydia &
Jason (Crystal Clear Sound)
