What is folk music?

I submit that Jon Bon Jovi playing an acoustic guitar - is rock.
And Ry Cooder playing an electric guitar - is folk.

I once asked Oliver Schroer the difference between fiddle and violin.
His answer was, "the tux."

I guess it's all in the ear of the beholder...
