I collect various versions of this song, and would appreciate anyone who can
take the time to send me the lyrics they know (or better still a tape). I
have a some versions which are quite different.
According to my research this song likely goes back at least to 1900, and
probably comes from the minstrel tradition by way of vaudeville.
I have a version by the Golden Gate Quartet, a black gospel group from
Norfolk, Va, which dates around 1940.
Also have versions by John McGhee from around 1930, Hylo Brown, and Mac
Wiseman from the sixties.
Why do I collect this song? Well, that's another story for another time.
Thanks
Tom McCreight
