After a really long absence from going to live music due to work load, this
past Thursday we tore outselves away from our computers to go to Hugh's
Room to hear Nonie Crete and Eugene Rea.
It was great. To those that meant to go but missed it.... you missed a
really good show.
Visiting the club that night as audience were Paul Mills and Ron Negrini,
it was really nice to say hello to them again.
Unfortunately due to lack of warm bodies in seats, the show got started
later than announced (9:00 instead of 8:30), and they decided to split the
performances into half-hour slots instead of the original 1 - hour slots.
Nonie and Eugene got the audience warmed up in a hurry with their blend of
traditional celtic, and orginal material. Though we have seen these two on
a number of occasions they never fail to stun us with their versatility and
great musicianship. In addition to having a fabulous voice, being a really
good songwriter and performer, Nonie has this great trait of versatility of
style, which means you NEVER get bored listening to her. Eugene is an ace
picker on his mandolin and banjo and does beautiful vocal harmonies when
called for. These two musicians are really professional and smooth,
excellent presentation, and are really good entertainers. From the
applause, the audience agreed.
Due to early rising, we had originally planned to stay for Nonie and
Eugene's set and then rush home, however, because the sets were changed to
half hour segments, we were able to hear part of the other two acts before
hearing Nonie's closing set. Singer/songwriter Peter Verity really
impressed us with his songwriting, and we were really glad to have had the
opportunity to catch his first set. We also caught Darlene's first set.
Great voice, interesting act.
There seemed to be some problems with the stage monitors.
All in all a great way to spend an evening, GREAT music, wonderful venue
(Kudos as always to dear Richard for providing this elegant venue....),
really good attentive and friendly service, delicious snacks (WOW on that
Olive bread...).
We'll just have to get away from our computers more often......
