I've tried a whole bunch, spent a fortune in the process, and the best setup
I've tried is the new B-Band CR-2 condenser-electret under-saddle transducer
and mic combo (http://193.65.242.29/new/index.shtml). The price is very
reasonable, and the tone is pretty damn fine indeed. It wires up into a
stereo 1/4" endpin jack you can split and run into any board/d.i. setup, or
you can run the stereo out into B-Band's own external Entity preamp/mixer
unit. This is the setup I use, with a couple of Nanoverbs stuck to the top
with industrial velcro. When it comes to air travel and especially festival
workshop stages, it sure beats the heck out of lugging around the Stephen
Fearingesque monstrosity of a rack case, Mackie 1202, Quadraverb etc. I used
to use (I mean, nobody sounds better than Stephen, but yeeesh :-).
When I played Rootsfest in Victoria last year, Stevie Coyle and James Nash
from the Waybacks had these little Raven Labs external preamps they swore
by. I think Don Bray's got one now too...
