My first guitar was a Harmony with mahogany top, back and sides. I won it on a
CBC television contest in Calgary when I about 8 or 9 years old. (No, I didn't do
much to deserve this honour: there was a riddle to solve and my Mom figured the
answer out to be "harpsichord" and I sent it off in the mail, and, alas, I think
it was the only correct answer!) The name of the program was "Candy Cane House",
and receiving the guitar doubled as my first T.V. appearance (yikes!). Anyway, it
sat in my closet for several years, coming out occasionally as I attempted to
1) learn to play left-handed, and
2) develop callouses!
Eventually, I succumbed to learning right-handed when I was 14 or 15. As I recall
the action was never set-up very well (ouch...).
In 1970 I bought a new 12-string Framus, played that for a few years, then traded
both guitars in for a Yamaki Deluxe. This was a big improvement on either of my
other guitars, and I happily played the Yamaki until 1979 when I ordered a
parlor-size guitar from Peter Sawchyn. This has been my number one guitar ever
since, and although I also own a lovely old Washburn (circa 1920) that I had Peter
restore, the Sawchyn guitar remains my first choice.
I won't get into other instruments...
Cheers, Paddy
