This is a good one Ben.
"The best place to record acoustic music" may be anything from a living room
to million dollar studio. The experienced folks in this field usually start
with few preconceived notions of what will work best for a given recording.
Rather they will try a number of different configurations before "rolling
tape" Just as one Martin D28 will sound different from the next one, so too
will one Neuman mic sound different from the next one. Even when they're the
same model. The same holds true for mic pre-amps, compressors, reverbs etc.
etc. The choice is endless and so in the end you need to find people who
have a lot of experience recording in this genre.
The good ones will listen to your instrument from a couple of different
angles before even attempting to put a mic(s) near it. The good ones also
know what frequencies are produced by various acoustic instruments and how
these frequencies will interact with other instruments in the mix.
Here's a list of folks that I've worked with that really know their stuff.
In Nova Scotia there's Jaime Foulds, Karl Falkanham and Dave Hillier. In
Montreal; Frank Opolko , Kingston/Ottawa; Ken Friesen, Toronto; Paul Mills,
Ken Whiteley, Danny Greenspoon, Mike Haas, Chad Irshick Winnipeg; Rick
Fenton, Vancouver; Roy Forbes and on the islands; Dave Essig.
Some of these people are engineers and some are producers. Some are both.
Regardless all have great ears are nice folks and if you asked them would no
doubt be able to help you out either directly or with references.
Feel free to email me directly if you want to discuss this further or need
contact info for any of these folks.
